(Bituminous Shale)

(1.5" x 2.0" Rock)

Shale is a clastic sedimentary rock made of mud (clay-silt).

Oil shale (bituminous shale) is a shale petroleum source rock that contains kerogen (organic

remains of small sea plants such as algae) in its pores which was changed into petroleum crude

oil by heat and pressure when deeply buried in the earth so that petroleum crude oil migrated out of

its oil shale source rock and into its oil sandstone, its oil limestone or its oil dolostone reservoir rock.
